More than 600 guests attended HANDY’s (Helping Disadvantaged Neglected Youth) Ninth Annual Scholars Breakfast on May 21 at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six presented by The Wasie Foundation and sponsored by Shutts & Bowen LLP. The organization also honored its longtime supporters and 2014 college graduates.

As guests enjoyed breakfast in the Crystal Ballroom, HANDY honored three “Champions of Children” who have made significant contributions to the organization. Honorees included President and CEO of Resolve Marine Industries Joseph Farrell Jr., community volunteers and child advocates Marsha and Alan Levy and President of the Florida Bar Eugene K. Pettis of Haliczer Pettis & Schwamm.
Kirk Brown and Suzanne Driscoll, Esq. were also presented with HANDY’s “Biggest Heart” awards which are kid’s choice awards from HANDY’s youth.

HANDY currently supports 119 scholars who attend 17 in state and 4 out-of-state colleges and universities. Since 1996, HANDY’s Scholars Committee has awarded funding close to 600 students.

HANDY is a nonprofit organization that aims to embrace, educate and empower vulnerable youth to become engaged and productive adults. For more than 27 years, HANDY has met the needs of more than 50,000 Broward county children and youth in foster and relative/non-relative care under protective supervision. HANDY annually serves more than 1,300 at-risk children and youth between the ages of birth to 23 years old.
